A modern-day adventure

No longer viable as a stock route, the Canning Stock Route was reduced to a dotted line on maps and was at risk of being lost forever.

Enter the four-wheel-drive adventurer in search of an unforgettable outback experience. In recent years, this tough and isolated track has become an iconic experience for 4WD enthusiasts. It has become a tourist magnet where the attraction is the journey itself rather than a destination.

However, it is not for the faint-hearted! Traversing 900 sand dunes through some of Western Australia's most inhospitable country, the route is one of the most remote and isolated four-wheel-drive tracks in the world and travellers must be extremely well prepared before undertaking this trek. It is suitable only for experienced 4WD desert travellers and is best attempted in small convoys.

The track’s growing popularity brings with it new challenges for sustainable management of the route. During 2006 to 2010 (the centenary period of the CSR construction), a number of scientific studies have been scheduled to gather a good deal of information that will help prepare a management plan for the future. Currently the CSR has no formal management, a unique situation for such an important tourist attraction.

Nevertheless, almost the entire length of the stock route has now been returned under Native Title to the Traditional Owners. Provision has been made for the continued 'use and enjoyment' of the CSR by travellers but be aware that the land surrounding the stock route has restricted entry rights. By prior arrangement with land owners, permits will often be granted to allow access. Refer to the Access Permits page for the issue and conditions of permits.
